About ISAM

The International Society The International Society for Aerosols in Medicine (ISAM) was founded in 1970. The objectives of ISAM are to stimulate and further the interdisciplinary cooperation and exchange of information in all aspects of aerosol research in medicine including health effects of inhaled aerosols and pulmonary drug delivery. ISAM sponsors international conferences, publications, study groups and special research projects. To introduce new therapies into practice ISAM has organized educational seminars, and provided advice on basic and advanced levels to staff and international organizations such as WHO and ATS. ISAM is a non-profit organization

Current ISAM board members are: Patrice Diot, M.D., President (France); Beth Laube, Ph.D., past-president (USA); Gerhard Scheuch, PhD president-elect (Germany); William D. Bennett, Ph.D., general secretary (USA); and Jim Blanchard, Ph.D, treasurer (USA). They are assisted by an international group of 5 additional board members: Sunalene Devadason (Australia), Bruce Rubin (USA), Hettje M. Janssens (Netherlands), Jim Fink (USA), Mark Everard (UK).

ISAM sponsors an International Congress every two years. The most recent, was held at Tours, France, in June 2007. The next Congress will be held in Monterrey, CA (USA) in May 2009. Check this web site for further information. In intervening years, Regional Congresses and Focus Symposia on specific topics are organized. If you have a special interest in aerosols, you should be a member of ISAM. Currently, there are over 300 members. They represent different disciplines connected to aerosols in the lung, e.g. physicians, physicists, biologists, pharmacologists, respiratory care practitioners, mathematicians and others.. Please, join us and receive all benefits of membership in ISAM.

ISAM fosters and encourages promising new researchers, and recognises eminent, long-standing career achievements within these areas of interest through a generous awards program. The Journal of Aerosol Medicine and Pulmonary Drug Delivery, also known as JAM , is the official journal of ISAM. Published quarterly by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. ,JAM serves as a forum for studies involving inhalation of particles and gases in the respiratory tract, including the use of aerosols as tools to study basic structural and functional phenomena, their use as selective delivery systems for medication and the toxic effects of inhaled agents. Gerald C. Smaldone, MD PhD (Stony Brook, NY) is the Editor, assisted by an international Editorial Board of 37 members. The Journal is indexed by the major electronic indices and available electronically and in hardcopy to members of ISAM.
